12月6日、今日は広沢池へ行ってきました。お目当ては、毎年この時期のおなじみ、京都の冬の風物詩「鯉揚げ」です。朝から冷たい風が吹いていましたが、この季節ならではの光景が見られると思うと、足取りも軽くなります。

鯉揚げとは、嵯峨の広沢池で池の水を抜き、春に放流されたコイやフナ、エビなどを一斉に収穫する行事のこと。池には“栓”が設けられていて、これを抜くと勢いよく水が流れ出し、みるみるうちに水位が下がっていきます。

捕れた魚はその場で販売されるため、飲食店の方や毎年楽しみにされているご近所さんの姿もちらほら。網にかかったコイが跳ねるたびに「でかい！」と歓声が上がり、現場は盛り上がります。ちなみに広沢池は人工池で、近くの遍照寺の庭池として造られたものなのだとか。庭と聞いて想像する規模を軽く超える大きさで、こちらも驚きでした。

私が到着した12時半頃には、すでに池はすっかり干上がり、底がすべて見える状態に。毎年恒例の風物詩なので、おそらく今夜の京都のニュースでも取り上げられることでしょう。

余談ですが、10月・11月に広沢池周辺でクマの目撃情報があったので、少しドキドキしながら向かいました。今日は人が多くて安心でしたが、「まあ、もう12月だし冬眠してるはず…」と自分に言い聞かせながら歩きました。

Koi Harvest at Hirosawa Pond, 2025 — A Beloved Winter Tradition in Kyoto

On December 6, I headed out to Hirosawa Pond to see one of Kyoto’s familiar winter traditions: the annual koi-age, or koi harvest. A cold wind was blowing from early morning, but knowing I’d get to witness this only-at-this-time-of-year scene made my steps feel a little lighter.

The koi-age is a yearly event in which the water of Hirosawa Pond in Saga is drained, and the carp, crucian carp, and shrimp released in spring are harvested all at once. The pond has a built-in “plug,” and once it’s pulled, the water rushes out rapidly, causing the water level to drop before your eyes.

Because the fish caught are sold right there on-site, you’ll see local restaurant owners and neighbors who look forward to this event every year. Each time a big carp flaps in the nets, people shout, “That’s huge!” and the place gets lively. By the way, Hirosawa Pond is actually an artificial pond, originally created as part of the garden for nearby Henjōji Temple. It’s far larger than what you’d normally imagine when you hear “temple garden,” which was quite a surprise.

By the time I arrived around 12:30 p.m., the pond had already dried up completely, its entire bottom exposed. It’s such a classic seasonal sight that it will likely be featured on Kyoto’s local news tonight.

As a side note, there were bear sightings around Hirosawa Pond in October and November, so I walked there feeling a bit nervous. Today there were plenty of people around, which was reassuring, and I kept telling myself, “Well, it’s December now—they should be hibernating…”
